Linkevičius: Selective application of nuclear safety standards by Belarus is not acceptable

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania has received an answer from the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Yukiya Amano to the letter of Lithuania’s Foreign Minister and the Minister of Energy of 3 January 2017. In the letter, Lithuania expressed its concerns over the recurring incidents at the Astravets nuclear power plant (NPP). Once again, Lithuania set out its requirements to Belarus: to invite the Site and External Events Design (SEED) mission of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) for a full-scope assessment review of the site and design safety, as well as to carry out risk and safety assessment tests (the stress tests) at the Astravets NPP. Lithuania also requested Belarus to ensure international supervision of the Astravets NPP.

Lithuania’s priority: consolidation of achievements

President Dalia Grybauskaitė met with foreign ambassadors accredited to Lithuania. Ambassadors from 57 world countries attended the annual meeting which focused on internal and external political issues, global tendencies and challenges.

The President underlined that Lithuania’s priority for 2017 was to consolidate its international achievements and take new steps needed for ensuring security in the region and society as well as for boosting economic competitiveness.

Dalia Grybauskaitė congratulated the newly elected President of the European Parliament

President Dalia Grybauskaitė extended congratulations to the newly elected President of the European Parliament, Antonio Tajani.

The President underlined that Lithuania would continue its successful cooperation with the European Parliament in coordinating positions on critical continental agenda issues as well as in working jointly and responsibly towards a united, strong and prosperous Europe.
